The U.S. Men’s National team had an amazing run in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, winning Group C and advancing to the Round of 16. There are many great things to be taken from this World Cup as soccer in America definitely took a few steps forward, not only in the play on the field but also in the tremendous support by the fans. A special thank you to Official U.S. Soccer Bars is in high order, as these establishments formed the home base for fans across the country. This was the first World Cup since the Official U.S. Soccer Bar Program commenced and each bar proved their loyalty and support for the U.S. national team. The highly-anticipated June 12 match against England resulted in establishments packed with fans hours before kickoff, and even more fans lined the streets hoping to catch a view of the game through the windows. With excitement high and U.S. fans proudly wearing their red, white and blue, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The dedication of the Official U.S. Soccer Bars was on full display with early morning openings for the June 18 and June 23 matches against Slovenia and Algeria. Fans set their alarms and made it to the Official U.S. Soccer bars for the 7 a.m. PT kickoffs, and the Official Bars were waiting for them with open doors. Donovan’s dramatic goal in stoppage time helped the U.S. defeat Algeria 1-0 and provided the U.S. as Group C winners. The Official Bars continued the celebration as fans called off work to join in the festivities. The USA's final match against Ghana in the Round of 16 on June 26 was the most-watched World Cup game ever with over 19.4 million viewers. That number did not even include fans who went to Official U.S. Soccer Bars across the country decked out in jerseys, flags and even accompanied by the occasional vuvuzela during the 120-minute match. Thank you Official U.S. Soccer bars for your commitment to supporting the U.S. Men’s National Team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. You make us proud and all deserve to be the July Bar of the Month. |
