German Olympian Maren Meinert scored the lone goal as the Boston Breakers defeated the Carolina Courage, 1-0, in the first ever match for the two WUSA clubs. Boston's American defender Keri Raygor was credited for the assist on Meinert's goal in the 14th minute of play. The home opener for the Courage drew a crowd of 6,143 fans to Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
The Philadelphia Charge posted a 2-0 victory Sunday evening at San Diego to disappoint the Spirit's sell-out crowd of 6,155 screaming fans. Philadelphia got its goals from German defender Doris Fitschen and English forward Kelly Smith. Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore made five saves in earning the shutout victory.
