The U.S. Paralympic Soccer Team defeated Canada twice in a pair of training matches last week, putting together mirror 4-0 victories on Oct. 10 and 12 in Chula Vista, Calif. U.S. Paralympic head coach Jay Hoffman had called in 12 players to a week-long training camp that concluded on Oct. 15.
Paralympic soccer (played seven-a-side) usually features two 30-minute halves, but the matches against Canada were 90 minutes long, featuring three 30-minute periods.
Josh McKinney led the team with three goals during the two matches, while Jon McCullough added two goals and one assist. Marthell Vazquez also scored two goals for the U.S. All three players hail from Virginia Beach, Va.
Hoffman used the camp to begin preparing his team for a 2007 schedule that will include the Parapan American Games and a World Championship. The site and dates for the 2007 World Championship, which will serve as qualification for the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, have yet to be determined.
Paralympian Josh Blue was not with the team at the training camp due to commitments after winning the fourth season of NBC's Last Comic Standing (watch).
