CHICAGO (March 13, 2012) - This May, U.S. Soccer will host a National Goalkeeping course at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida. The course is open to all coaches who currently hold their USSF National “A” or “B” licenses. It is especially beneficial for coaches with their “A” licenses because attending this course will earn them enough CEUs to renew their license.
This course is not solely for goalkeeping coaches; rather, it is extremely valuable for team coaches as well.
“This course is very much for the team coach, not just the goalkeeping coach,” said lead course instructor Peter Mellor. “It is for the team coach to better understand the role of the goalkeeper on the team. Both the coaches and the goalkeepers they have on their teams will benefit from it.”
Course instructor Phil Wheddon added, “This course was developed to enhance the ability of the head coach, assistant coach and goalkeeper coach to integrate the goalkeeper into team practices. It is essential that coaches are able to address the goalkeeping position within the team environment. The Goalkeeping License provides a unique approach to accomplishing this.”
During the course, coaches will learn all of the different features of goalkeeping, including the technical, tactical, social, and physical aspects. Coaches will learn to understand the game from the goalkeeper’s point of view, which in turn will open up new insights in to the players on the rest of the field.
“The coach will learn how to see the game from inside the goal to out in the field, versus the normal view point, which is the coach on the half way line,” Mellor said. “Coaches will be seeing the game through the goalkeeper’s eyes. They will get a different outlook of the game from inside the goal.”
This course will enable the instructors to share their philosophy, experience, and methodology of the goalkeeping position. Furthermore, it will allow coaches who attend the chance to further their knowledge of soccer in general and open their eyes to a whole new way of seeing the game. The course has received outstanding feedback from coaches who have taken it in the past, non-goalkeeping coaches in particular.

According to Wheddon, “With the insight from the experienced staff and an educational environment second to none, this course is a must for all qualified coaches.”
