CARSON, Calif. (July 13, 2009) – In a battle for group 2 lead at D.A. Finals Week, U-15/16 Cal Odyssey stated the extent of their desire for a berth in the championship game by gutting out the win in a physical match against New Jersey’s PDA. It was their second 1-0 win in Finals Week, and came on the back of goalkeeper Matt Dishno.
Under the lights at The Home Depot Center, Cal Odyssey got the first chance of the game in the eighth minute. A well-weighted through ball from Chris Newmark found the feet of Villyan Bijev, but his 1v1 shot was saved by PDA ‘keeper Jake Wagmeister to keep the score at zeroes.
In the 14th minute, PDA should have gotten on the board off the head of Nathan Bruccoleri, but Cal Odyssey goalkeeper Matt Dishno was equal to the task with a dive to his right.
One minute later, however, things seem decidedly pitched in PDA’s favor when a run by Tommy Uttaro up the left sideline and into the box was stopped by a trip from the Cal defense. With the referee pointing to the spot, Brandon Allen stepped up to take the shot for PDA. Placing the kick into the bottom left-hand corner, Allen was stunned to see Dishno sprawl to his right and make the stop, keeping the game scoreless and giving Cal Odyssey a second life.
With fresh momentum, Cal Odyssey began to attack. Pressuring the PDA defense, they finally struck in the 29th minute. Newmark took the ball up the left side and had time to cross the ball. Connecting for the second time on the night with Bijev, the midfielder collected the ball with one touch and fired into the left side netting, as Wagmeister was moving in the opposite direction.
With pressure mounting, tackles began getting harder, resulting in several cards to both teams. One hard foul in the 52nd minute resulted in a great chance for PDA to get back in the game. With a free kick just outside the box on the right side, Johan Hernandez’s attempted curl into the upper right 90 went just over the bar.
PDA kept up their attack, getting another good shot on frame in the 62nd minute, blasting a shot towards the roof of the net. Once again, Dishno reacted well, pushing it up and over the bar as he fell backwards. Two late corners again provided PDA with opportunities, but Dishno punched one away and saw one cleared by the head of Christopher Young.
With the win, Cal Odyssey goes to 2-0-0 in Finals Week and is in great position for a shot at the first place match; they’ll prepare to face Washington Premier FC on Wednesday, July 15 at 4 pm PT. At the same time, PDA will take on Greensboro Youth Soccer in both teams' final match of the opening round.
