Chicago Magic AS Monaco And FC Dallas Draw 2-2 To Close Out Group Play
With both teams fighting for second place in group 1, the last U-15/16 group match of Finals Week set itself up to be a hard fought affair. With a two quick strikes late in the first half, FC Dallas came back to draw Chicago Magic AS Monaco 2-2 at The Home Depot Center.
July 16, 2009
Coaches had barely gotten settled in their seats when FC Dallas found themselves down a goal in the first minute. Dribbling down the right side, Magic midfielder Jacob Bushue beat his defender into the box and was looking to turn the corner when he was clipped from behind. Immediately pointing to the penalty spot, the referee drew incredulous shouts from the FC Dallas bench. Taking his own kick, Bushue hit it with force right down the middle, beating ‘keeper Nelson Morales.
The game settled down following the quick start, with both teams probing throughout the midfield. FC Dallas midfielder Victor Ulloa and forward Ruben Luna almost walked in on goal in the 15th minute with two quick give and go’s, but Luna was stripped of the ball approaching the six yard box.
In the 30th minute, Chicago almost added onto their lead off the head of Arturo Garza, but the ball hit the crossbar. Despite falling to the feet of Cody Wilkins, the midfielder couldn't convert and the ball was eventually cleared out by FC Dallas.
Six minutes later the Magic finished a header, as Wilkins made amends for his previous missed opportunity with a solid finish into the left side of the goal. Rising above his defender, the midfielder struck the ball with purpose to give his team a 2-0 lead.
But mere seconds later, FC Dallas was on the board. Acting completely unfazed by a 2-0 hole, 2008-09 Development Academy U-15/16 Player of the Year Ruben Luna and forward Bryan Leyva passed several one-touch balls between each other, combining around several Magic defenders. The finish was the culmination of beautiful football as Leyva walked in on goal and coolly slotted the ball past Magic goalkeeper Jovani Castanon.
One minute later, FC Dallas tied it up on another beautiful goal, though this one was an effort of individual brilliance. Stripping a Chicago midfielder just inside the Magic half, FC Dallas winger Daniel Garcia dribbled out to the left. Dribbling 28 yards from goal, Garcia ripped a hard shot with his left foot that swerved around Castanon and into the far post side netting. With three goals in three minutes, the game had gone from 1-0 to 2-2.
The second half saw a return to heavy passing in the midfield, with neither team able to get a decent shot on goal. Looking to capture the win himself, Leyva tried to dribble through on goal and almost succeeded, beating three Magic players before being obviously fouled just outside the goal box. With the clock ticking away in second half stoppage time, Leyva put his shot over the wall and on frame, but the effort lacked pace and was caught by a diving Castanon to seal the game at 2-2.
