New York Red Bulls Close Out Finals Week With 3-1 Win Against Greensboro
Despite best efforts on the part of both teams all week, Greensboro Youth Soccer and the New York Red Bulls faced off for the honor of seventh place today on the final day of Development Academy Finals Week. With two first half goals, the New York Red Bulls took a lead they would never surrender and concluded their trip to L.A. with a 3-1 victory against Greensboro Youth Soccer.

New York held possession for most of the match, attacking seemingly at will. They cashed in their first real chance of the game in the 12th minute off a clever pass by Clifford Lyle. Holding the ball up at the top of the box, Lyle saw Victor Manosalvas waiting on the side to run behind the defense. Lofting the ball over the defenders with a small chip, Manosalvas ran in behind them and beat the offside trap. Momentarily freezing in expectation of an offside call, the Greensboro defense allowed Manosalvas to walk in on goal, where he deftly chipped it over an onrushing John Brooks.
Doubling their lead in the 32nd minute, New York again scored off a breakaway attempt after David Najem ran in behind the defense on the right side of the box. Collecting the pass from Lyle, Najem put it by the keeper inside the far post, giving Lyle his second assist of the night.
Greensboro Youth Soccer didn’t get their first good chance until the second half, despite several first half forays into the NY final third. In the 45th minute, Austin Dunker took a corner for the North Carolina side, finding the head of Andrew Walker who put it just wide of the post.
Two minutes later, the Red Bulls put in a textbook headed goal, taking advantage of the only corner kick they got in the game. Good service from Clint Caso found a jumping Brandon Adler on the back post, and the defender made the finish look easy to put New York up 3-0.
Responding quickly, Greensboro played simple two-touch passing to produce their only goal of the game in the 51st minute. Taking the ball at midfield, Matthew Mills passed to forward Eduardo Alvarez on the right side of the box and ran towards goal. After holding for two seconds to draw a defender, Alvarez sent the ball back to Mills, who was now crashing the near post. Beating the keeper to the ball, the midfielder headed it into the top corner, seemingly bringing Greensboro back in the game.
Recognizing the changing momentum, however, New York played smart, possessive soccer for the rest of the game, eventually wearing down both Greensboro midfielders and the clock. Collecting their second win of Finals Week, and second in a row, New York ends up at 2-2-0 on the week while Greensboro Youth Soccer falls to 0-4-0.
