CARSON, Calif. (July 10, 2009) — Forced to play with ten men after a red card was given in the 68th minute, the Dallas Texans held on for a 1-1 draw in the last game of Day 1 at D.A. Finals Week against IMG Soccer Academy. A scoreless second half became heated, resulting in five yellows and one red card combined for both teams.
Perhaps due to unsettled nerves along the IMG backline, the Dallas Texans opened their Finals Week scoring account quickly, with Conor Doyle striking in the sixth minute. Left unmarked, the forward received a cross about eight yards out in the box and volleyed it in off the side of his foot, beating IMG goalkeeper Larry Jackson.
Woken from their slumber, IMG proceeded to possess the ball for most of the first half, creating several chances in the attacking third. They made their first foray count with a break out off a corner kick. Receiving a pass on the left side, midfielder Alex Walters cut inside to the top of the 18 yard box. Dribbling to the right, Walters took a shot but it was partially blocked by an onrushing defender. With the goalie moving right and the ball redirected in the air to the left, Andres Acevedo ran onto it and headed it into the left side netting.
Dallas got the next chance, as a long ball from the back found Doyle onside with plenty of space. Rushing towards goal and drawing the defender tracking back, he smartly centered for an oncoming Blake Wise. Reacting quickly, IMG goalkeeper Larry Jackson came off his line and blocked the shot with a great reaction save.
The last good chance of the half for IMG found Walters again dribbling around defenders at the top of the box, unfortunately ripping his shot just over the bar in the 32nd minute.
While the first half had no doubt been physical, the second half became downright chippy as both teams fought for the win. Dallas’s Jacob Garnett was shown a straight red card for a hard challenge from behind in the 68th minute, putting the Texans down to ten men. It was a swift turn of events, after Doyle had ripped a shot just three minutes earlier that hit the right post. Five other cards were also given, all yellows, and all for hard tackles.
The bookings produced four minutes of stoppage time, during which IMG academy earned three corners, but a battened-down Dallas defense held fast to preserve the point.
On Sunday, July 12, IMG Soccer Academy will face off against FC Greater Boston at 3 p.m., while group leaders Carmel United will take on the Dallas Texans at 4.
