Cal Odyssey Clinches Title Game Berth With 2-1 Win
A come-from-behind 2-1 victory by Cal Odyssey against Internationals earned them six points in their first two games which, combined with the other day’s results, will put them atop the group and in the U-15/16 championship match for the second year in a row.

Needing a draw in the group’s other match, Odyssey’s chance immediately took a hit just nine minutes in. Odyssey goalkeeper Matt Dishno’s goal kick was trapped shy of midfield not by a teammate but by Internationals attacking midfielder Nicholas Parianos. Seeing the chance to counter quickly, Parianos passed it forward to striker Russell Tattersall towards the left side of the box. Tattersall touched the ball towards the top of the key and shot with finesse instead of power, bending a shot around the goalkeeper and inside the right side netting to take a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Cal had a chance to equalize but couldn’t finish it off. Captain Villyan Bijev, who scored two goals in their first group match, received a pass from Daniel Flores who had taken an intercepted ball straight through the midfield. Turning at the top of the box, the striker went for the right side and hit the iron with his curler, beating goalkeeper Brendan Cash but not the post.
Just seconds later, Internationals struck iron of their own, after a buildup found Nicholas Parianos with space along the left side of the box. Parianos sent a low ball through the box but with no one crashing, it went all the way across to right midfielder David Murrow. After drawing a defender, Murrow chipped a pass to the top of the box where Sachem Wilson hit a volley that was deflected onto the left post.
With Internationals holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, word came out that the group’s other match ended in a draw—meaning a Cal Odyssey win would assure them first place in the group. With renewed vigor, Odyssey began the second half on the attack and equalized almost immediately.
In the 18th minute, heavy pressure by Gregory Antongnoli II caused Internationals defender Zach Martin to lose possession inside the his own 18. Latching onto the loose ball, Antongnoli walked in on goal and fired hard past Cash to tie the game at 1-1.
With just over ten minutes left, Internationals gave up a free kick approximately 25 yards from goal to the left side. Facing a four-man wall, Cal’s Flores fired to the right side with pace, beating the goalkeeper who could not have seen it until it was too late and bearing down hard.
Choosing to make a defensive stand, Odyssey fell back to give up the midfield to Internationals but the Cleveland side could not break through the bunkering defense, returning Cal to the U-15/16 championship game after falling to the Derby County Wolves last year. They’ll face the Chicago Fire, who clinched their own group in the evening games just hours later to force a matchup of West vs. Central conferences in the title game.
