Development Academy Finals Week Day 4 Notes
Find out what's in store as we head into the second day of U-17/18 matches.
July 13, 2010
FINALISTS DECIDED: For the first time, both teams that will play in the Finals Week U-15/16 championship have been decided after just two games as Cal Odyssey and the Chicago Fire will compete for the title on Friday evening. The game will be played under the lights on Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Field at The Home Depot Center at 7 p.m. PT.
MORE TO PLAY FOR: Though the group winners have already been decided, the other placement matches are still wide open for the other U-15/16 teams in Carson. Aside from the winners, both groups are separated by just one point from second through fourth place in the current standings. Placement games for the U-15/16 age group will be played on Friday to determine the final standings for the 2009-10 season.

EVERYTHING ON THE TABLE: The U-17/18 teams are all entering their second matches of Finals Week with everything to play for. FC Dallas and CASL Chelsea FC currently share the top of the standings in Group 1 and will be looking to gain some ground ahead of their clash on the last day of group play. FC Dallas will be looking for points against last year’s U-15/16 champion Derby County Wolves while CASL FC Chelsea will try to stay at the top when they take on Crossfire Premier.

All four teams in Group 2 are still in the hunt entering the second round of games, however, and will be looking to stay on pace with the group leaders.

U-17/18 Quick Hits
- Of the three penalty kicks given through three days of Finals Week play, only one has been converted. Moises Orozco helped Real So Cal earn a valuable point with his perfectly placed shot late in Sunday’s match.
- Baltimore Bays Chelsea let up a goal to the Concorde Fire in just the third minute, but rallied to score three goals in three minutes to finish with a 4-1 victory.
- CASL Chelsea FC picked up one of the biggest wins during its history of play at Finals Week, topping last year’s U-15/16 champion Derby County Wolves 2-1 to give them a tie for the top place in Group 1.
- The FC Dallas defense held Crossfire Premier to just one shot on goal on Sunday evening to preserve the 1-0 lead and a jump on Group 1.
THE MOST COMPETITIVE MATCHES: The Development Academy playoff system was created to add to the number of meaningful games for Academy athletes, further enhancing the player development process. Since its launch in the fall of 2007, the Academy has improved the training environment, provided relevant, high-level matches on a consistent basis, increased the level and efficiency of scouting for the national teams and provided players, coaches and referees with structured programming.
