Sockers FC Draw De Anza Force 1-1
Chicago club Sockers FC earned a point in their second match of Finals Week with a 1-1 draw against the De Anza Force.
July 12, 2010
Sockers FC were looking to rebound from their opening 2-1 loss to the Chicago Fire, while De Anza played a hard-fought draw against D.C. United in their first match of group play. Christian Dean of De Anza began the match in top form, causing several matchup problems for the Sockers’ defense along the left sideline.
The pressure paid off immediately, De Anza scoring in the sixth minute off the foot of Dean. Until that point De Anza had been passing the ball around the box to find space, but in this case defender Anthony Panayides saw an opening and sent a lofted ball straight down the middle. Splitting the defense, Dean controlled the high pass and calmly finished past goalkeeper Jeffrey Gal.
In the 11th minute Dean nearly got his second off a clever play on a free kick. Stationed along the left sideline just outside the box, Dean touched the ball to his partner standing over the ball and then stepped down the line to receive the pass back, easily taking advantage of a 2v1 against the lone player set up as the wall. Moving straight towards goal, Dean fired hard on goal from a sharp angle and Gal did well to push the ball over the goal.
Sockers eventually began to take some possession of their own however, and were particularly dangerous on counterattacks. In the 31st minute, they capitalized on a free kick just inside the half to level the game at one.
Sending the ball down the middle, it was flicked on towards goal but deflected by the defense. Sockers passed it out to the left to an open winger, who sent the ball back in across the goal. Leaping at the back post, David Selvaggi simply headed the ball back the way it came and found Thomas Arns open in the center of the six-yard box. Arns headed the ball in over the onrushing Paul Blanchette and the game was tied.
Three minutes later, Selvaggi almost made it 2-1, taking an outlet pass from his defense and dribbling the length of the field down the middle. With no De Anza players stepping up to challenge, Selvaggi fired from the top of the box towards the lower right corner but Blanchette got down to push it aside.
Defenses held firm through most of the second half, until a foul in the box by the De Anza Force gave Sockers the chance to steal a win in the dying minutes. In the 76th minute, Jorge Herrera took down an onrushing attacker trying to reach a through ball and immediately heard the whistle. Stepping up to take the shot was Sockers striker Khaliq McKenzie, who calmly aimed for a well-placed lower left corner shot but missed just inches wide, leaving the win on the table and giving both teams one point on the night.
