U-18 MNT Draws Netherlands in Lisbon Opener

LISBON, Portugal (May 25, 2011) -- The U.S. U-18 Men's National Team opened it's trip to the Lisbon International Tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. The Americans led after a first-half goal from Victor Pineda, but the Dutch were able to level the score early in the second half.

In the 38th minute, Luis Rendon went on a long run and raced toward the box from the left flank. He drew Netherlands' goalkeeper Stefan van der Lei out to defend him and then slotted the ball across for Pineda. The Chicago Fire midfielder cooly played it into the goal from about six yards out.

The Dutch goal came in the 58th minute on a counterattack. Similar to the U.S. goal, Cas Peters carried down the left side and into the penalty area. Goalkeeper Jon Kempin came out off of his line, but Peters was able to slip the ball around him and into the side netting of the far side.

In the 87th minute, the U.S. seemed to have pulled ahead following a corner kick, but the referee saw a foul in the box and waved off the goal.

The U.S. will quickly turn around to play host Portugal on Thursday, May 26, in the second match of the Lisbon Tournament and will round out play on Saturday, May 28, against Finland.
