MILWAUKEE (July 15, 2011) - Michael Gamble unloaded for four second-half goals as Baltimore Bays Chelsea downed New York Red Bulls 4-1 to capture fifth place at 2011 Development Academy Finals Week in the U-17/18 age group.
After an opening several minutes that were equal parts high energy and unsettled, Red Bulls got on board from a deft finish by Chris Cano in the 12th minute. Controlling the ball just outside the area, he chopped back on his defender to tee up his left foot and hit a low skimmer to the far post.
Red Bulls kept their foot on the pedal, applying heavy pressure on Baltimore in their own half that led to back-to-back chances, the best off the foot of Keith Francisco, who whistled a shot just over the bar from 15 yards out. Their lead remained unthreatened through to the end of the first half.
Bays came back to life when the second half commenced, and Gamble’s tenacity and composure paid off early. Malcolm Harris deserved equal credit for the first goal, lifting a nifty chip over the Red Bulls backline and neatly into the path of Gamble. Taking two touches forward, he picked out the far post and was spot on with his finish.
Sensing the initiative was theirs, Bays pressed onward and Gamble delivered another fantastic finish from 15 yards out that curled high into the right side netting, putting his team ahead for good in the 62nd minute.
For the next several minutes the action became a midfield duel as both teams searched for the goal that would change the game, and for the third time that half it was Gamble who proved decisive. Second-half substitute Joseph Glos engaged his defender one-on-one deep in the right corner and decided on trying a cross that was deflected but maintained a flight path to the far post. Gamble stood unmarked and put home a tap-in header to earn a hat trick.
Red Bulls gamely tried to play their way back into the match in the closing minutes, but Gamble’s class proved too much to overcome, and his calm finish in the 89th minute put an exclamation point on one of the finest solo performances in Finals Week history.
