U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team Heads to Paris for Val-de-Marne Tournament
Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera Takes Same 22 Players to France That Participated in 2011 AGS Cup in Spain; U.S to Face France, Peru and the Netherlands Under-17 National Teams
CHICAGO (Oct. 24, 2011) â€“ The U.S. Under-17 Menâ€™s National Team traveled on Sunday from Spain to France for the Val-de-Marne tournament in Paris. U.S. head coach Wilmer Cabreraâ€™s team will face France, Peru and the Netherlands.
The same 22 players that finished in second place at the 2011 AGS Cup in Lâ€™Alfas del Pi, Spain, crossed the border north to Paris. The team will face France on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Two days later, the U-17 MNT takes on Peru before wrapping up the tournament on Oct. 29 against the Netherlands. All three matches kick off at 2 p.m. local time, 8 a.m. ET.
Cabrera and his team arrived in Paris on Sunday, Oct. 23, after competing in the AGS Cup in Spain, where the teamÂ tied 1-1 with Mexico with a goal from Chris Lema. The teamÂ tied 1-1 against United Arab Emirates with a goal by Herber Mejia-Flores, thenÂ defeated Russia 2-0 with two goals from Wesley Wade. The tournamentÂ wrapped up with a 5-0 win against a regional team from Valencia, with two goals from Wade and one each from Angel Heredia, Conor Donovan and Rubio Rubin.
New York Red Bulls provide the most players on the roster with five: Steven Echevarria, Lema, Evan Louro, Kevin Politz and Wade. The only other club to send multiple players is the New England Revolution, with Guyllain Kabala and Declan McCabe making the trip. All four Academy conferences are represented by 11 different clubs.
U.S. Soccerâ€™s U-17 Residency Program features 32 of the countryâ€™s top players in the age group converging and training daily in Bradenton, Fla. The team is at the beginning of a two-year cycle that will culminate with the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, with the goal of qualifying for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The U.S. is the only nation to have qualified for all 14 previous editions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup and is coming off a Round of 16 appearance in the 2011 event in Mexico.
