CHICAGO (April 24, 2012) – The U.S. Futsal National Team, drawn into Group A of the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, is scheduled to play its group games July 2-4 at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City.
The USA will kick off group play against Panama at 8 p.m. ET on July 2 and will then face either Canada or El Salvador at 8 p.m. ET on July 3 before meeting host Guatemala at 10 p.m. ET on July 4.
The semifinals will take place July 6, with the Group B winner facing the Group A runner-up at 8 p.m. ET and the Group A winner taking on the Group B runner-up at 10 p.m. ET.
Both semifinal winners will compete in the championship match at 8 p.m. ET on July 8. The losers will play in the third-place match scheduled for 4 p.m. ET that same day, though all four teams in the semifinals will advance to the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
To determine the last Group A qualifier, Canada and El Salvador will meet in a two-leg playoff on July 28 and 29 at the Domo Polideportivo. Group B consists of Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica and St. Kitts & Nevis.
The U.S. has won two of the four previous CONCACAF Futsal Championships, in 1996 and 2004. Costa Rica won in 2000 and Guatemala took first in 2008, when the country last hosted the tournament. In 2008, the USA reached the Futsal World Cup but failed to advance out of the group stage.
U.S. Futsal head coach Keith Tozer’s group wrapped up a domestic training camp from April 1-7 in Torrance, Calif. The team will reconvene in May with a 22-player training camp in Los Angeles. In early June, the team is heading to Guatemala to play four tune-up matches against professional futsal teams. The USA returns to Guatemala on June 27 in preparation for the July 2-8 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.
