BRADENTON, Fla. (December 1, 2005) – The Brazil U-17 ’90 MNT beat the U.S. U-17 ’90 MNT by a 5-1 margin in the first international appearances for most of the U.S. team at the first day of the 2005 Nike Friendlies.
Goalkeeper Josh Lambo, pressed into action when Chris Miller was injured in warm-ups, starred for the U.S. making 10 saves, several in outstanding fashion despite the result. Midfielder Jesse Paredes scored the only U.S. goal in the 68th minute, slotting the ball past Marcelo as he came off his line. Paredes got in alone on the goalkeeper after beating the Brazil defense to a long ball played by midfielder Victor Yanez.
For the first 25 minutes, the U.S. controlled the match with seven scoring chances - two each from both Paredes and Temi Molinar - while Lambo just had to make one save during that span.
Brazil took control for good with a goal in the 29th minute by Lula after a U.S. turnover and a switch of field by the Brazilians. Six minutes later Brazil scored with Rafael flicking on a free kick off the foot of Bernardo to make the score 2-0 at the half.
Brazil would score three times in the second half, with No. 9 forward Alex getting two opportunistic goals. Brazil pounded 32 shots at the U.S. net as they found space to play later in the past.
The U.S. U-17 ’90 MNT again face Brazil on Friday at noon in a match that will be broadcast by Fox Soccer Channel on December 21 at 11 p.m. ET.
