2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round Kicks Off With Two Lower Division Clubs Advancing Past MLS Teams
The third round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicked off Tuesday night with six matches, including two upsets. It concludes Wednesday, June 30, when D.C. United (MLS) branches out to Fairfax, Va., to host the Richmond Kickers (USL-2) and the Portland Timbers (D-2) welcome the Seattle Sounders (MLS) to complete the field of eight that will compete in the tournament quarterfinals starting July 6.

The Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Second Division shocked their MLS opponent, defeating the New York Red Bulls in extra time with a goal from Dominic Oppong. The other surprise of the evening was provided by the Charleston Battery (USL-2), who played the Chicago Fire (MLS) to a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 score in penalties.
In games where the MLS side hosted while victorious over a D-2 club, the Columbus Crew, led by goals from Andy Iro and Steven Lenhart, defeated the Rochester Rhinos, 2-1. In Houston, the Dynamo held off Miami FC, 1-0, on a goal from Lovel Palmer while AC St. Louis fell 2-0 to the Los Angeles Galaxy, who advanced on the strength of goals from Chris Klein and Juninho. Playing at Cal State Fullerton, Chivas USA also advanced with a 1-0 win against the Austin Aztex, getting an early goal from Jesus Padilla to earn their first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win since 2005.
The semifinals are set for Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and the final will be played Oct. 5.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 95 consecutive years dating back to 1914. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
