U.S. Men's National Team Roster Set for First Match of 1999
ORLANDO, Florida (Tuesday, January 19, 1999) - After 10 days of training here at the University of Central Florida, U.S. National Team head coach Bruce Arena today named the 18 players that will travel to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, tomorrow (Jan. 20) to prepare for the Jan. 24 full- international match vers

Heading the list of selections are midfielders Claudio Reyna (VfL Wolfsburg / Germany) and Jovan Kirovski (Fortuna Cologne / Germany), and defender Gregg Berhalter (Cambuur Leeuwarden / Holland), three European-based players that did not participate in Arena's first camp and international match back in November 1998. Arena's selection also includes veteran goalkeeper Tony Meola (NY/NJ MetroStars), the USA's No. 1 goalkeeper during the 1990 and '94 World Cups. Meola, 29, who was once a fixture in the U.S. nets, has not appeared for his country since July 4, 1994, the day Brazil defeated the United States, 0-1, in the Round of 16 at the 1994 World Cup.
"Meola has justified his call up to the national team," said Arena. "He's brought a great attitude to the camp... You can see the difference in his experience."
The U.S. selection includes players with varying levels of international experience. With 111 caps, Cobi Jones is the most veteran member of the squad. Other experienced players include Jeff Agoos (87 caps), Meola (87), Joe-Max Moore (71) and Reyna (62). Conversely, eight players have appeared fewer than five times for the USA, including two players with zero caps - goalkeeper Tom Presthus (D.C. United) and midfielder Imad Baba (New England Revolution).
The United States has never defeated Bolivia (0-2-3 record) in five attempts dating back to 1993 and the Jan. 24 match will be the first time the U.S. plays in the South American nation. The teams last met during U.S. Cup '96 in Washington, D.C., when Bolivia topped the U.S., 2-0, at RFK Stadium. Bolivia was ranked 61th in the most recent FIFA world rankings (Dec. 23). Comparatively, the U.S. was ranked 23nd in the FIFA rankings.
The United States will depart for Santa Cruz on Wednesday and train for three days before the Sunday match. Kickoff on Jan. 24 is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. local (5 p.m. ET) at the Ramon Tahuchi Aguilera Stadium in Santa Cruz.
Following the match in Santa Cruz, the National Team will have a week off before reconvening in Jacksonville, Fla., in Feb. 1 to prepare for a the USA-Germany match on Feb. 6 at Alltel Stadium. Tickets for the match, which will be a double-header with the U.S. Under-23 National Team, can be purchased by calling 904-353-3309.
