U.S. MNT HEADS TO SOUTH AFRICA FOR THE 2009 FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP
AFTER BACK-TO-BACK FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING MATCHES;
CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER JOINS USA BID COMMITTEE

BRADLEY NAMES FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP ROSTER: U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley has named the 23-man roster that will compete in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup from June 14-28 in South Africa. The U.S. kicks off action against defending World Cup champion Italy on June 15 at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane/Pretoria (ESPN, 2:25 p.m. ET), and then faces Brazil on June 18 in the same venue (ESPN2, 9:55 a.m. ET). The United States finishes group play on June 21 against Egypt at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg (ESPN2 2:25 p.m. ET). All 16 matches of the tournament will be available in high definition on the ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD. Fans can also follow all the USA’s matches live on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker. All Confederations Cup matches televised on ESPN and ESPN2 will be available in high definition, which will be offered as a simulcast of ESPN and ESPN2’s coverage. Additionally, ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD will feature three pre-game shows leading up to the USA’s match against Brazil, the game between Italy and Brazil on June 21 and the Confederations Cup final on June 28. All three pre-game shows begin at 2 p.m. ET. The U.S. team will depart June 8 for South Africa, setting up camp in Tshwane/Pretoria the following day. The FIFA Confederations Cup is made up of the six champions of each regional confederation, the defending World Cup champions, and the host nation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. qualified for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup by winning their second consecutive CONCACAF Gold Cup. In front of 60,000 fans, the U.S. erased a 1-0 deficit and defeated regional rivals Mexico 2-1 in the final on June 24, 2007 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

U.S. MEN WRAP UP FIRST HALF OF FINAL ROUND OF 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: The U.S. Men’s National Team posted a historic 2-1 victory against Honduras behind a successful penalty kick conversion from Landon Donovan and a game-winning header from team captain Carlos Bocanegra in the 68th minute Saturday evening in front of 55,647 fans at Soldier Field in Chicago. The win improved the USA’s unbeaten streak at home in World Cup qualifying to 16 matches, collecting a record of 15-0-1 on U.S. soil dating back to 2001. Donovan now stands as the USA’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying with 11 goals. Bocanegra’s goal was his second game-winner of the qualifying cycle, with his first coming against Guatemala on Aug. 20, 2008, in Guatemala City. The U.S. will depart on Monday for South Africa to prepare for its opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup and will later continue its busy summer by defending the CONCACAF Gold Cup title. The 2009 edition of the regional championship kicks off on July 4 against Grenada at Qwest Field in Seattle and continues on July 8 against Honduras in Washington, D.C., and July 11 against Haiti in Foxborough, Mass. Earlier on Saturday, Australia, Japan, Netherlands and South Korea became the first three teams to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Australia advanced with a scoreless draw against Qatar, while South Korea defeated UAE 2-1 and Japan sneaked past Uzbekistan 1-0 to earn their spot in the World Cup Finals.

SCHWARZENEGGER JOINS USA BID COMMITTEE: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose years of public service have been rooted in great part by his dedication to sports and fitness, accepted an invitation to join the Board of Directors for the USA Bid Committee in its endeavor to bring the FIFA World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022 (watch). As governor of California, the most populous state in the U.S. with a significant history of playing host to FIFA World Cup men’s and women’s matches, Schwarzenegger will play an influential role as a member of the Board of Directors as the USA Bid Committee prepares its application and campaign to bring the world’s largest sporting event to the United States. Gov. Schwarzenegger joins the Board of Directors of the USA Bid Committee that recently welcomed U.S. National Team icons Landon Donovan and Mia Hamm, as well as former U.S. Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger. In the months ahead the USA Bid Committee will add additional national leaders from the sectors of sports, entertainment, government and business. The USA Bid Committee’s efforts also recently earned the support of President Barack Obama, who has reached out to FIFA – the world's governing body of soccer – to endorse the efforts to bring the world’s largest sporting event back to the United States. In a letter to FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter and U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati, President Obama noted the role soccer played in his life as a youth, and its ability to unite people, communities and nations from every continent.

LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP FIRST ROUND KICKS OFF TUESDAY, JUNE 9; SECOND ROUND LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP POSSIBLE VENUES ANNOUNCED: U.S. Soccer has announced the home teams for the second round possible pairings in the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Results from the first round of play on June 9 will determine the potential matchups and venues for the second round to take place one week later on Tuesday, June 16. All 32 lower division teams will enter the tournament in the first round and have been grouped geographically into eight groups of four teams. The first-round match ups were drawn randomly within the four-team groups, although matchups between teams in the same division were avoided when possible. The two winners from each group will face off in the second round on June 16, with the winners then advancing to the third round to face the eight qualified Major League Soccer teams. The quarterfinals will be played July 7, the semifinals will be played July 21 or 22, and the final will be played on Sept. 2. A complete second round schedule is available at ussoccer.com.

ESPN NETWORKS TO TELEVISE U.S. MNT MATCHES AT THE 2009 FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP AND TELEFUTURA: The U.S. Men’s National Team’s matches at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup will be broadcast on four different ESPN platforms, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile TV, as well as Telefutura. ESPN and ESPN2 will televise all 16 matches of the tournament, which takes place June 14-28 in South Africa. The United States has been drawn into a powerful Group B along with reigning world champions Italy, five-time World Cup winners Brazil, and reigning African Cup of Nations winners Egypt. The U.S. kicks off action against Italy on June 15 at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane/Pretoria, live at 2:25 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN360.com, ESPN Mobile TV and Telefutura. Three days later, the U.S. faces Brazil at 9:55 a.m. ET in the same venue. That match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN360.com and Telefutura. – U.S. YOUTH NATIONAL TEAMS UPDATE –

U.S. U-23 WOMEN HEAD TO CLEVELAND FOR TRAINING CAMP: The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team, under the guidance of head coach Bill Irwin, will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for a training camp from June 12-19 at the Premier Soccer Academies, a facility developed and opened by legendary U.S. goalkeeper and current Aston Villa starter Brad Friedel. Irwin will bring 24 players to camp, during which the U.S. team will play two matches against the Cleveland Internationals of the USL W-League. Irwin’s squad is made up entirely of collegiate-aged players, with numerous players eligible for the U-23s currently competing in Women’s Professional Soccer. The roster includes 2008 Olympic gold medalist Tobin Heath, who will be entering her senior season at UNC this fall, as well as five players (including Heath) who have represented the USA in a FIFA youth Women’s World Cup. That group includes forward Alex Morgan, who helped the U.S. U-20s to the world title last year in Chile while scoring four goals and earning the Silver Ball as the second best player in the tournament and the Bronze Shoe as the third leading scorer. The roster also includes midfielder Casey Nogueira and goalkeeper Kelsey Davis, who both trained with the full U.S. team in Canada during its run up to the USA’s 4-0 victory over the Canadians on Memorial Day in Toronto. Irwin will be focusing on this training camp to select an 18-player roster that will travel to England in July for two matches against England.

U.S. U-18 WOMEN FINISH CAMP AT THE HDC: The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team tied two women’s club teams during a week-long training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., that finished up last weekend. On June 1, the U-18s tied the Pacific Pali Blues, 0-0, as U.S. head coach Dave Chesler used 20 players. The U.S. team drew 1-1 with Ajax of Los Angeles of the WPSL on June 2 as Natalia Ledezma tallied in the 17th minute off a through ball from Chioma Ubogagu. Ajax tied the match six minutes before halftime, but neither team could find the net in the second half. A week earlier, the U.S. U-20s had faced Ajax and the Pali Blues during a training camp at the HDC, defeating Ajax 1-0 and tying the Blues in a 4-4 shootout. The U-18s, made up mostly of players born in 1991 and 1992, are trying to work themselves into the contention for spots on the U.S. team that will attempt to qualify for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany (which has a Jan. 1, 1990 age cutoff), but the 1992s are also age-eligible for the 2012 U-20 Women’s World Cup.

U.S. U-17 MNT AND U-15 BNT SLATED FOR TRAINING CAMPS IN ZAREPHATH, N.J. FROM JUNE 14-21: The U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team will hold a 40-player training camp in Zarephath, N.J., as preparations for the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup continue. The FIFA U-17 World Cup is slated for Oct. 24-Nov. 16 in Nigeria. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1992 are eligible for that event. The U.S. U-15 Boy’s National Team will simultaneously hold a 48-player camp in at PDA for eight days under head coach Jim Barlow. The U-15 camp is for players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994. Rosters for both camps, 88 players in total, will be finalized and announced later this week.

2009 CONCACAF BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TAKES PLACE JUNE 17-21: The qualifying tournament for the CONCACAF region for the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup will take place June 17-21 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The tournament was originally scheduled for April 29-May 3 but was postponed due to concerns over the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in Mexico. The U.S. was drawn into Group B of the tournament, along with Costa Rica and Bahamas. Group A consists of defending champion and host Mexico, El Salvador and Canada. The U.S. will kick off the tournament against Bahamas at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 17, and will close out the group at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 19, against Costa Rica. The semifinals, along with the match for fifth place, will be held on Saturday, June 20, and the two finalists will face off on Sunday, June 21.

PEAK PERFORMER: U.S. MNT captain Carlos Bocanegra scored his second game-winning goal of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying cycle to put the U.S. ahead of Honduras 2-1 on Saturday at Soldier Field. His first game-winner was against Guatemala on Aug. 20, 2008, in the USA’s first World Cup qualifying victory on Guatemalan soil.

MARQUEE MATCHUP: The oldest annual tournament in U.S. team sports history is back on Tuesday, June 9, as the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicks off. The first round features 32 teams facing off throughout the country, with the second round taking place June 16. Major League Soccer teams will join the tournament June 30 in the third round.

SOCCER SHOCKER: As the first half of the final round of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup wraps up in the CONCACAF region, Mexico stands in fifth place out of six teams. Yes. That’s right. Mexico dropped a crucial match 2-1 to El Salvador and, after four matches, has only three points. Mexico hosts Trinidad & Tobago in the second match of the double fixture on Wednesday, June 10, at the infamous Estadio Azteca.
