Post-Match Quotes: USA 2, Canada 1

U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage

On the match:
“We tried to keep possession a little bit better in the midfield, but the two forwards up top with [Lauren] Cheney coming in made the difference. I think we had some good moments in the first half as well, but we didn’t create too many chances. Overall, I am happy with the changes we made over 90 minutes.”

On the match:
“You have two things from the game, attitude over 90 minutes, which we emphasized after the Sweden game, and I think we brought that to the game, but also smartness. We kept possession with our two center midfielders. Carli Lloyd and Lori Lindsey did a good job at times and eventually we created chances and eventually we put them away as well.”

On Lindsay Tarpley scoring her first goal since returning from injury:
“Tarpley is a goal scorer. That is why she is valuable.”

On getting better every match:
“We are happy not only with the result, but also with the way we played. We improved and did so much better than the last game against Sweden. Whatever we do right now, I know for sure that we will be so much better in the World Cup. Everyone game is important to improve.”

On facing China with a chance to win the tournament:
“China is a technical team. I’ve seen them play twice and it will be interesting to see how we deal with their technical way of playing in the midfield. We’ll take it one step at a time and every game we will improve small things. The midfield will still be very important, but we also must deal with China’s two forwards. I think they have played well. At the same time, we have to make sure our two forwards get involved with the attack as well.”

U.S. WNT defender Becky Sauerbrunn

On the match:
“It was kind of a tale of two halves. Defensively, I thought we were pretty solid throughout, but the Canadians, especially [Christine] Sinclair, make good, really dynamic and smart runs, so a lot of times they were pulling us out of our normal positions. We kind of recovered and had a couple of last-ditch saves and tackles and Barnie and everyone who subbed in came up huge.”

On winning goal scorer Lindsay Tarpley coming into the match:
“When Tarp came in, she brought an entirely new energy level. She was amazing and I think she was the difference in the second half. She was kind of the combining player between our midfielders and forwards and even with our the defenders so she kind of unified the entire group there at the end, and I think that’s the reason we held on is that we started to move the ball around so much better in the second half.”

U.S. WNT forward Lauren Cheney

On the match:
“Today was a better feeling all around. Coming on in the second half, I knew I had to bring energy. I love playing with Alex [Morgan] up top and Tarpley, obviously, and we connected and got some good stuff going on.”

On taking a lead, giving up an equalizer and then getting the winning goal:
“I think that shows our reliance. We always want to win, but against Canada especially as they are our rival and it was good to get a win under our belt.”

U.S. WNT midfielder Lindsey Tarpley

On Lauren Cheney’s goal:
“The first goal Kelley [O'Hara] played a great ball into the box. I saw Cheney off to the right so I flicked it to her and it was a great finish.”

On her goal:
“It happened pretty quick. All I was focusing on was putting the ball where I wanted to. I had a chance early in the second half. I went for power and I hit the (crossbar) so I was going for placement on that one and I finished it.”
