U.S. U-23 WNT Defeats Sweden 4-2 at La Manga Tournament

LA MANGA, Spain (Feb. 25, 2011)With a starting lineup that featured seven players from Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team defeated Sweden 4-2 in its first match of the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain. It was the first international match of the year for the U-23s, which got two goals from Melissa Henderson, one from Sarah Hagen and one from Casey Nogueira.

The match featured a flurry of four goals in 15 minutes in the middle of the first half that staked the Americans to a 3-1 halftime lead. The USA opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Nogueira crossed the ball into the penalty box from the right side and Henderson beat the Sweden ‘keeper to the ball to touch it just past her into the net from eight yards out. Nogueira then converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute to make it 2-0. The USA made in 3-0 in the 34th minute when Hagen finished a rebound off a 20-yard shot from Nogueira, stuffing it home from five yards out.

One minute later, Emma Berglund pulled a goal back for the Swedes, but just two minutes into the second half Henderson bagged her second of the game off an assist from Sinead Farrelly. Three minutes after that Sofia Jakobsson scored Sweden’s second and final goal.

The USA faces England next on Feb. 27. U.S. head coach Bill Irwin has brought a roster of 18 players to Spain, 10 of whom will be playing WPS this upcoming season.
