The U.S. Under-15 Men’s National Team beat the U-17 IMG 3-1 this afternoon at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The next match for the U-15s will be against the U-16 Clearwater Chargers, a local club from the area, on Friday.
In the first half, the play was even as both teams had a couple of good opportunities on goal. In the 16th minute, midfielder Peri Mesosevic collected a ball about 30 yards out and dribbled through three defenders before ripping a shot on goal that forced the keeper to dive to his right and punch it wide to keep the game scoreless.
The majority of the chances in the first half occurred in the final seven minutes. In the 38th minute, IMG had two opportunities on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Jonathan Harris shut down the first opportunity, coming off his line to knock away a shot by an IMG forward who had run onto a through ball from midfield. The ball spun into the air and bounced behind Harris towards another IMG player near the right post, but his attempt was blocked by defender Bryan Arguez.
In the 42nd minute, Justin True almost created a goal by using his blazing speed to run down a long through ball, but IMG’s ‘keeper was just able to knock it away as he tried to collect it near the top of the 18-yard box.
Moments later, IMG had their best opportunity of the half when a forward unleashed a bullet from 25-yards out that hit the crossbar.
In the second half, IMG struck first in the 47th minute. An IMG midfielder collected the ball and slipped it between U.S. defenders to an onrushing forward, who took one touch to collect the ball before slotting the ball past Harris.
The U-15s found the equalizer in the 60th minute off a free kick from Guiseppe Carotenuto. Taking the kick from about 40-yards out on the right sideline, “Pepe” served the ball into the box that Mesosevic latched onto, heading it past the helpless ‘keeper.
Just a minute later, Cameron Brown took the ball from the left sideline, dribbled towards midfield and laid the ball through to Anthony Wallace on the right side of the box. With the ‘keeper committing to Wallace, the midfielder pushed it to his left to a wide-open “Pepe” for an easy finish.
The U.S. capped off the scoring, with a goal off a corner kick in the final moments of the match. Guiseppe curled in a ball from the left flag stick and Joseph Sorrentino knocked it in with his a half-volley at the far post.
