CHICAGO (Thursday, October 21, 1999) - In conjunction with Nike and Innovative Sports Marketing, the U.S. Soccer Federation has acquired rights to the FIFA U-17 World Championship for the first time, allowing fans to follow all the action of the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team as they try to
Oct. 21, 1999
As part of a 17-game broadcast package, every U.S. match will be featured on tape delay on Fox Sports World and live on the DISH Network via pay-per-view. The entire broadcast package, which also includes complete coverage of the Brazilian and Mexican U-17 National Teams, can be ordered through the DISH Network by calling 800/333-DISH. Additional pay-per-view and cable outlets will be announced in the coming weeks.
"This is a landmark agreement for U.S. Soccer," said Mark Noonan, Chief Marketing Officer for U.S. Soccer. "We know how important it is to give our fans an opportunity to follow our teams when they are competing at the highest level, and that's why we worked so hard with Nike and Innovative Sports Marketing to get this deal done. Educated followers of the sport know that our U-17 team is something special, and we didn't want to miss the opportunity to showcase their talents."
The U.S. U-17 Men's National Team is currently riding a 20-game unbeaten streak heading into the World Championship in New Zealand, the longest such streak in the history of any U.S. Men's National Team program. The 18-player squad is widely considered to be the most talented U-17 team in U.S. Soccer history and features high-scoring forward Landon Donovan and crafty midfielder DaMarcus Beasley, two players who turned pro before their 17th birthdays.
Fox Sports World's tape delay schedule of the U-17 championship has yet to be determined. For more information on the U-17 FIFA World Championship broadcast package, please contact Doug Jacobs at Innovative Sports Marketing at 201-610-0200.
After opening the tournament on Nov. 10 against New Zealand, the U.S. U-17s will battle UEFA runners-up Poland on Nov. 13 and perennial youth powerhouse Uruguay on Nov. 16.
