U.S. U-17 WNT Heads to Florida to Play Three Matches Against Germany
The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team opens its World Cup year with a training camp in Sunrise, Fla., from January 27-Feb. 6.
CHICAGO (Jan. 11, 2010) -- The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team opens its World Cup year with a training camp in Sunrise, Fla., from January 27-Feb. 6. U.S. head coach Kaz Tambi will bring 24 players to Florida (with one player still to be named) for three matches against the German U-17s. The U.S. U-17s played Germany three times in January of 2009, losing two and tying one, but that German team was a year older than the USA. These games pit players in the same age group, born mostly in 1991 and 1992, that hope to be representing their countries at the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago. The USA is currently scheduled to play Germany on Feb. 1 (10 a.m.), Feb. 2 (3 p.m.), and Feb. 4 (9:30 a.m.) in Sunrise, with a possible fourth match on the docket for later that afternoon depending on player availability. Both teams are hoping to qualify for the World Cup in T&T, to be held Sept. 5-25, 2010 in five cities, four on the island of Trinidad and one on Tobago. The USA will attempt to qualify of the second-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup through the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship being held in Costa Rica from March 9-20, 2010. Tambi called in 11 of the 18 players who traveled to Argentina last December and swept four games from the Argentina, Chile and Uruguay U-17s/U-20s. Several players from that trip could not attend this camp due to injuries and school commitments. U.S. captain Morgan Brian, the only holdover from the U.S. team that finished second at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, scored five goals in the four games in Argentina.
