U.S. Under-18 MNT Finishes Third at Northern Ireland Milk Cup
The U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team topped Denmark 5-4 on penalty kicks to finish third at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup on Friday. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation as Denmark scored in the seventh minute, but the U.S. answered in the 40th on a tally by Chad Marshall off of a corner kick. In group play, the U.S. finished 1-1-1 with a win vs. Scotland and a draw with Poland.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (Friday, July 25, 2003) - The U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team beat Denmark 5-4 in penalty kicks on Friday to finish in third place at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup. The match was even at 1-1 after regulation, and the U.S. hit five of its last six PKs to clinch the result.
Denmark opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but the U.S. would answer before the half. Defender Chad Marshall notched the equalizer in the 40th minute off an asssit from Arturo Alvarez on a corner kick.
The game was even for the entire second half, despite the second-half sub Chad Barrett being sent off for the U.S. in the 80th minute with a red card.
After the first PK attempt Denmark earned a 1-0 edge as Danny Karbassiyoon missed his try for the U.S. The next five players for the U.S. - Marc Burch, Hunter Freeman, Craig Capano, Arturo Alvarez and Heath Pearce - all converted their chances from the spot, and Denmark missed its second and sixth try, sending the U.S. home victorious.
In group play, the topped Scotland 2-0 on Wednesday in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup in Northern, Ireland to finish second in their group, with a 1-1-1 record. The victory was the first for the U-18 MNT during the tournament as they had tied Poland 1-1 in their first game and fell to Paraguay 1-0 two days later.
Against Scotland, midfielder Danny Karbassiyoon got the game-winner for the U.S. in the 70th minute. Defender Hunter Freeman got an insurance goal in extra time, as the win propelled the U.S. into second place in front of Poland.
In the first game of the tournament against Poland, the U.S. got an equalizing goal from Karbassiyoon in the 52nd minute.
