HOUSTON, Texas (Friday, August 2, 2002) - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team fell 2-1 to Canada at the USASA Soccer Festival in Houston, Texas, tonight. The Canadians used an 87th-minute winner to avenge a 1-0 loss to the U.S. in January. The two teams will meet one more time this year, with much more at stake when they face off in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying in November.
The USA controlled play for much of the game, but was a bit unlucky in their offensive third. The U.S. outshot Canada 7-2, and the northern neighbors scored on their only two shots of the game. With the loss, the U.S. team falls to 1-2-1 in 2002 internationals.
Canada scored first, going ahead in the 14th minute. Furman midfielder Ricardo Clark equalized for the U.S. in the 84th minute, heading home a Bobby Convey corner kick. After playing for D.C. United in a 0-0 draw with Chicago on Wednesday, Convey joined the Under-20s in Houston and tonight he played in his first Under-20 match since the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship in Argentina.
After Clark's goal Canada bounced back to score the gamewinner just three minutes later on a counterattack.
The U.S. will wrap up their participation in the Soccer Festival tomorrow, taking on Mexico's Under-20 MNT at 8 p.m. at Robertson Stadium.
The Under-20s are using this tournament to prepare for their CONCACAF qualifying tournament in November. The CONCACAF Group B Qualifying Tournament will be held in the U.S. from Nov. 13-17, where the U.S. will be joined by Canada, the second-place team from Central America and the winner from the Caribbean playoff between the Group B and Group C champions. The top two teams will qualify for the World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates from March 25 – April 16, 2003.
