While the U.S. will be vying for its eighth-straight FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance, Guatemala will be looking for its first.
The U.S. and Guatemala last met at the 2007 U-20 qualifying tournament in Panama City, the teams playing to a scoreless draw.
The U.S. has the advantage with a 4-1-1 record in seven meetings with Guatemala at this event.
Guatemala’s lone win against the U.S. in U-20 qualifying dates back to 1964.
In 1982, these two teams met at Estadio Nacional Mateo Flores, with the Americans – including current assistant coach Tab Ramos – earning a 3-1 victory.
Thomas Rongen will have all 20 players available for selection in the quarterfinal match with 18 players dressing for game day.
Through the two group games, 16 players have seen action.
Kelyn Rowe’s three goals in two games are second best in the tournament, behind Mexico’s Alan Pulido.
Four different U.S. players have accounted for the team’s six goals: Conor Doyle, Joe Gyau, Rowe and Bobby Wood.
Of the four goal scorers, only Joe Gyau had played in a qualifying tournament or World Cup before at any level. Gyau scored against Honduras at the 2009 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
The U.S., Costa Rica and Mexico are the only teams in the tournament who have yet to allow a goal through two games.
Defender Gale Agbossoumonde is the lone player on the U.S. roster to have been capped at the senior level. He appeared on Nov. 17, 2010, as a late sub against South Africa.
Agbossoumonde and Amobi Okugo helped the U.S. to the championship game of the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
A GLIMPSE AT GUATEMALA: Guatemala reached the quarterfinals by virtue of a second-place finish in Group A. After a 2-0 win against Jamaica in the opener, a 3-1 loss to Honduras set up a showdown between the hosts and the Americans. Gerson Lima has scored a goal in each of Guatemala’s group matches while forward Henry Lopez is the lone player on the team who has been capped at the senior level. Head coach Gustavo Bobadilla will be looking to guide his team to its first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance, and he’ll have home fans to assist him.
