U.S. Under-20 WNT Falls to Japan, 2-1, During Pre-World Cup Training Camp in Germany
The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team scored early, but let in a first-half equalizer and a late game-winner to Japan in a 2-1 loss during a pre-World Cup training camp in Germany, site of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup from July 13-Aug. 1.

GUTERSLOH, Germany (June 10, 2010) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team scored early, but let in a first-half equalizer and a late game-winner to Japan in a 2-1 loss during a pre-World Cup training camp in Germany, site of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup from July 13-Aug. 1.
The USA, which brought 20 of its 21-player World Cup squad to Germany, will face the hosts U-20 side on June 13.
At the U-20 Women’s World Cup, the USA will be playing in Group D along with Ghana, Switzerland and the Korea Republic, and will be based in Dresden for its first two games before moving to Bielefeld to finish the first stage.
The U.S. will open against Ghana on July 14 before facing Switzerland on July 17, with both games taking place at the Rudolf-Harbig Stadium in Dresden, a newly built 27,000-seat venue that will also host games of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The U.S. team will then travel to the recently renovated Bielefelder Alm Stadium, a 28,000-seat venue in Bielefeld, to conclude group play against the Koreans.
Against Japan, a first-round opponent for the USA at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the Americans took the lead in the 18th minute as Sydney Leroux scored her 24th career international goal at the U-20 level. The goal movement started when right back Rachel Quon sent a long diagonal ball to forward Maya Hayes running down the right wing. Hayes ran onto the ball and beat the left back before playing a pass on the ground across the top of the six-yard box for Leroux to first-time into the upper right corner.
Leroux missed a penalty kick in the ninth minute, sending her shot over the crossbar after Hayes had been brought down in the box.
Japan got both its goals from 2008 U-17 Women’s World Cup Golden Ball winner Mana Iwabuchi, who tallied on a penalty kick in the 31st minute that came from after miscommunication on a clear between center back Toni Pressley and U.S. goalkeeper Bianaca Henninger led to a foul.
Iwabuchi got the winning goal with just two minutes left in regulation time as a U.S. turnover in the back led to a cross into the penalty area for Japan. Iwabuchi was at the six-yard line when got her shot off, sending the ball between the backs and just under Henninger into the lower right corner of the net.
