Texas Women's Soccer Legends Hamm and Overbeck Lead U.S. National Team into Houston for Match vs. Mexico on December 10
CHICAGO (Thursday, November 30, 2000) - Two players with strong Texas roots, forward Mia Hamm and defender Carla Overbeck, headline the U.S. Women's National Team that will take on Mexico on Sunday, Dec. 10th at Robertson Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. The match, presented
Nov. 30, 2000
Hamm, an Austin, Texas, resident who spent part of her high school years in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Overbeck, the long-time captain of the U.S. team who hails from Richardson, Texas and won two national titles with her youth club the Dallas Sting, are just two of the 2000 Olympians who will face Mexico in the second match of the three-game "Glory Tour," celebrating the success of the women's national team this year. Along with Overbeck and Hamm, the world's all-time leading scorer with 127 career goals, the U.S. roster will feature the world's most capped player in Kristine Lilly, currently at 223 games played, as well as midfielder Julie Foudy, forward Tiffeny Milbrett and defender Kate Sobrero.
The match will mark the final national team appearance in the state of Texas for Overbeck, who will retire from international soccer following the USA's final "Glory Tour" match vs. Japan in Phoenix, Ariz., on Dec. 17. The USA-Mexico game will be the first visit to Texas for the U.S. Women's National Team since Feb. 17, 1996, when the USA defeated Sweden, 3-0, at Clyde Abshier Stadium in Houston in a preparation match for the 1996 Olympics. The USA also played a match two days earlier in San Antonio, Tex., defeating Sweden by that same 3-0 score. The U.S. women played a match in Dallas on May 15, 1995, prior to the 1995 Women's World Cup. The crowd of 6,145 at Franklin Field was at the time the largest ever to watch the U.S. women in the United States. The U.S. women are undefeated in the state of Texas at 3-0-0 and have outscored opponents 15-1 in those matches.
Three players from the 2000 Olympic Team will not make the trip as goalkeeper Briana Scurry has family commitments, defender Danielle Slaton is soon to undergo minor knee surgery and defender Joy Fawcett is pregnant with her third child, due sometime next June, and will once again put her soccer career on hold. Fawcett plans to continue playing internationally as well as for her WUSA club, the San Diego Spirit, perhaps joining the team in time for the end of the inaugural season. U.S. head coach April Heinrichs will likely add a goalkeeper and a defender to the roster prior to the match.
