CHICAGO (July 12, 2006) – Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart has replaced Minnesota native Briana Scurry on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team roster that will face Sweden on Saturday, July 15, at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. (tickets), in the first domestic match of the year for the USA. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. CT / 6 p.m. ET.
The roster change was made due to Scurry suffering lingering effects from a mild concussion that occurred in training last weekend.
Barnhart, a former Stanford All-American, has three caps for the USA, shutting out both France and Ukraine in 2005. Her first cap, however, was a strange one. It came as a forward when the USA ran out of substitutes against Mexico at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Oct. 16, 2004, during the “Fan Celebration Tour.” Barnhart played the last four minutes plus stoppage time at forward next to Abby Wambach in the 1-0 win.
The USA will arrive in Minnesota on Wednesday, July 12, and train at the NSC on Thursday and Friday before facing Sweden on Saturday. The USA has not lost in Blaine since 1987.
The match in Blaine will be followed by two more matches in July. The U.S. heads west for a July 23 meeting with Ireland in San Diego at 1 p.m. PT (tickets), before flying back across the country to Cary, N.C. where they'll face northern rival Canada on July 30 at SAS Soccer Park at 1 p.m. ET (tickets). Both games will be televised live on ESPN2.
