CHICAGO (May 17, 2007) — After successfully launching the program last year, U.S. Soccer is continuing to work with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs on a sports initiative that sends players and coaches from U.S. Soccer’s National Teams out as State Department Sports Envoys traveling abroad to conduct clinics and spark a dialogue with children from around the world.

Former U.S. Women’s National Team players Linda Hamilton and Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak will travel to Brazil from June 27-July 1 to help lead a soccer camp as part of the U.S. State Department’s Sports Envoy Program.

U.S. Soccer Federation President Dr. S. Robert Contiguglia presented Alavarez with FIFA’s highest honor, the Centennial Order of Merit, on Thursday (Jan. 13) at U.S. Soccer’s 2005 National Referee Training Camp. Alvarez was nominated for the honor by the Philippine Football Federation, of which he was Secretary General from 1966 to 1974. Alvarez has been instrumental in helping to build the U.S. Soccer Referee Program, including establishing referee exchanges with foreign federations and putting his reputation on the line to get U.S. Soccer referees recognized internationally.

Former U.S. Women’s National Team forward Cindy Parlow and U.S. Soccer Women’s National Staff Coach Jeff Pill head to El Salvador on Monday, May 12, as International Sports Envoys. Parlow and Pill will conduct clinics, reaching out to as many as 800 children in rural and urban areas.

U.S. Women’s National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 23-woman roster that will train for four days before facing Ireland in an important Women’s World Cup warm-up match at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 14, 2003. The match, which is the second part of a doubleheader with the Utah Blitzz of the USL’s Pro Select League, will kickoff at 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT) and will be televised live on ESPN2.

Former U.S. Soccer Men's And Women's National Team Players Head to Côte D'Ivoire As Department of State Sports Envoy Program Continues

Former U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Juergen Sommer and former U.S. Women’s National Team defender Linda Hamilton will head to Cote D’Ivoire today, Saturday, May 15, as Department of State Sports Envoys. Sommer and Hamilton will conduct eight clinics in eight cities over the course of five days, reaching as many as 400 boys and girls ranging from 11 to 17 years old.
