Fresno Fuego (PDL) Stun A-League's El Paso Patriots in Open Cup

July 23, 2003

The Fresno Fuego (PDL) pulled off the biggest upset of the 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night (July 22) as they topped the El Paso Patriots of the A-League by a 5-2 margin at Dudley Field in El Paso, Texas. Fresno is an amateur side of the USASA that qualifies for Open Cup play out of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League. El Paso plays in the A-League, the second division in the United States behind only U.S. Soccer. Fresno's win will be rewarded with a trip to brand-new The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 6 in the fourth round.
