For David Yelldell, the chance to play for the United States is the culmination of years of hard work and determination. Born to an American father and a German mother in Stuttgart, his football career has been one of slow and steady progress. After serving as an understudy to Brad Friedel in 2003 and 2004 at Blackburn, he returned to Germany to earn what is most critical in the development of a goalkeeper: playing time. After reaching the Second Bundesliga with FC Koblenz, he is enjoying a fantastic season with MSV Duisburg that has seen his side through to the German Cup final. Originally scouted by Glenn Myernick for possible inclusion with the U-23 team in 2004, his effort and commitment have finally paid off with what was a surprise call to the full national team. Clearly comfortable with his situation, the 29-year-old goalkeeper seems to be taking it all in stride…
