Castrol Performance Recap

Landon Donovan's goal in the final against Mexico was the epitome of a 'team goal'. While Clint Dempsey got the assist on the scoresheet, several players were involved in the fluid attacking movement that led to his record-setting strike.

With the goal, Donovan became the all-time leader in scoring in Gold Cup history, registering his 13th career goal in the tournament. That number surpasses the 12 scored by Luis Roberto Alves of Mexico, who remarkably scored all of his goals during one event, the 1993 Gold Cup that Mexico won at Estadio Azteca.

Landon's performances against El Tri have been especially prolific, netting five times in 12 appearances. Two of those goals have come in a Gold Cup final – he scored the game-tying goal in the 2-1 victory in 2007 – but surely the most memorable came in 2002 when he famously finished off a cross by Eddie Lewis to insure the USA's 2-0 victory in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

Donovan continues to be a nemesis to Mexico, and one of the most important threads in the fabric of one of the greatest rivalries in soccer.
