U.S. Finishes Fifth at Pan American Games, Tops Cuba in Penalties in Final Game

RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil (July 28, 2007) – U.S. goalkeeper Brett Philips saved Isven Roman’s effort in the penalty-kick shootout as the U.S. clinched fifth place at the 2007 Pan American games 5-4 on a penalty kick shootout after tying 2-2 in regulation.

John Ball and Troy Dusosky scored in the first half for the U.S., while Yampier Rodriguez and Eduardo Morales struck for Cuba. The teams played a scoreless second half that saw U.S. midfielder Denison Cabral sent off in the 39th minute. Despite playing down a man, the U.S. held on for the extra session forcing the match to penalties.

Cuba shot first, and Roman’s attempt was saved by Phillips, the U.S. captain during the match. Patrick Morris, Ball, Don D’Ambra, Joe Hammes and Troy Dusosky converted five consecutive penalty kicks as the U.S held on to win 5-4.

Brazil took home the gold medal with a 4-1 victory vs. Argentina, while Paraguay scored an overtime winner to take the bronze against Costa Rica.
