U-17 ’88 MNT CONTINUE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PREPARATIONS IN HOLLAND: The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team continues to prepare for the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship as they will travel to Atlanta on Monday (July 25) for a three-day camp before moving on to Holland for a week-and-a-half trip, which will include four matches against Dutch youth club teams.
Head coach John Hackworth will be taking 24 players to Atlanta before reducing the squad by two for the Holland trip. Only three players (Daniel Kelly, Bobby Warshaw and Diego Restrepo) joining the U-17s in Atlanta are not currently a part of U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program.
Upon arriving in Holland on June 30, the U-17s will travel to their camp location of Roermond and have two days of practice before their first match against PSV Eindhoven on Aug. 1. The U.S. will also face Heerenveen on Aug. 3, KRC Genk on Aug. 6 and Ajax on Aug. 8, before returning home the following day.

U-17 ’89/90 MNT FALLS TO CANADA IN MINNESOTA, GET SET FOR JAPAN TRIP: The U.S. Under-17 ’89/90 Men’s National Team fell to Canada 2-0 in their final game at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn., and is now preparing for a 10-day trip to Japan in early August.
In the Canada match, the U.S., comprised of players mainly born in 1989 and 1990, had difficulty dealing with the much older Canada squad, which was made up of mainly players born in 1987. Canada got goals from Mike D'Agostino (24th minute) and Alex Elliot (48th) for the victory. The players returned home after the Canada match, but will regroup on Aug. 5 in Los Angeles before departing for Japan.
The team will stay in Gifu for two days and play a match against the Gifu HS Select team on Tuesday, Aug. 9, before departing for Toyota City directly after the match. The U.S. will then play two games over the next four days, taking on Nagoya Grampus on Thursday, Aug. 11, and finishing with an international against South Korea on Saturday, Aug. 13.
As head coach John Hackworth will be working with the U-17 ‘88s as they continue their preparations for the FIFA U-17 World Championship, assistant coach Brian Maisonneuve will handle the head coaching duties for the trip. Maisonneuve is taking 18 players on the trip, a mix of players born in 1989 and 1990, seven of which are already in U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program. The other 11 players are possible additions to Residency this fall semester.
