U-17 '89 MNT Open Toyota Championship With 2-1 Victory Over Nagoya Grampus

TOYOTA, Japan (August 11, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '89 Men's National Team defeated the Nagoya Grampus Eight U-16s 2-1 in their opening match in Group B of the 6th Toyota International Youth Football Championship this evening at the Toyota Ball-Game Grounds in Toyota, Japan.

After a scoreless first half, Josmer Altidore registered the opening goal in the 50th minute when he finished off a pass from Perica Marosevic. Three minutes later, it was Mykell Bates doubling the score off a pass from Andrew Giallombardo.

Nagoya Grampus (J-League) was able to pull one back in the 80th minute when Mishima Keiichiro slipped his shot passed Brian Perk, but it was too little, too late.

In the only other match today, Japan defeated Russia 5-0 in Group A.

The U.S. will next face South Korea on Saturday, August 13, at the Toyota Ball-Game Grounds. South Korea will play its first match on Friday, August. 12, against Nagoya Grampus Eight.
