SECAUCUS, N.J. (December 7, 2005) - Defender Jeff Agoos, the No. 2 all-time capwinner in U.S. Men's National Team history, has annouced his retirement from soccer today through a press release issued by the MetroStars, his most recent club.

A member of the 1998 and 2002 U.S. World Cup and 2000 Olympic teams, Agoos played in a total of 134 games for the U.S. and started a record 124 of those. He played 10,479 minutes in a U.S. uniform, also the second most in U.S. history, and during that span scored four goals and had eight assists. Agoos has appeared in three World Cup games and 26 World Cup qualifiers. Also made 10 appearances and scored twice for the U.S. Futsal National Team in 1992, while helping lead that team to second place at the FIFA Futsal World Championship.

Agoos last appeared for the U.S. on May 26, 2003 as he captained the U.S. to a 2-0 victory over Wales in a friendly match played in San Jose, Calif. His first appearance came 16 years earlier on Jan. 10, 1988 vs. Guatemala, and three days later scored his first goal in a 1-0 victory also over Guatemala. A product of the U.S. youth system, Agoos began playing with U.S. youth national teams in 1985 after starring at the youth level in the Dallas area. In college, he played for Arena at the University of Virginia and was the school's only four-time All-American.

“I’ve come to the time in my life where I’d like to step back and look at different avenues of life and see where they lead,” said Agoos. “I can look back on my career with a big smile and be satisfied with my achievements both on and off the field.”

Professionally, Agoos played 10 season in Major League Soccer, while also spending time with SV Wehen in the German third division, the MISL's Dallas Sidekicks and the A-League's Maryland Bays. He won five MLS titles - more than any other player in league history - with D.C. United and the San Jose Earthquakes. He was named to MLS's all-time Best XI team this season.
