MANCHESTER, England (April 15, 2006) - The U.S. Under-17 ’90 Men’s National Team defeated a regional team from Northern England 5-2 on Saturday (April 15) in their first match during their 10-day training camp.
The U.S., which arrived on April 12 and trained for two days before their first match, got a hat trick from Sheanon Williams and goals from Brek Shea and TJ Nelson. Williams gave the U.S. the early lead when he buried a penalty kick in the eighth minute. Shea tallied just a minute later after receiving a pass from Brandon Tarr. The U-17s went up 3-0 in the 25th minute as Nelson scored on an unassisted strike.
The Northern England regional team tallied in the 31st and 56th minutes, but Williams responded both times with strikes of his own in the 51st and 70th minutes.
The U.S. will next face Liverpool’s youth squad on Tuesday, April 18, taking on Wales in Ryhl for their fourth international game of the year. The U-17s will have one final match in England against a Wigan Athletic youth squad on April 22 before jumping across the Irish Sea to participate in the Ballymena International Tournament in Northern Ireland.
The U.S. will kick off Group A of the Ballymena International Tournament on April 24 against Switzerland before facing Finland on April 25 and Northern Ireland on April 26. The U-17s will then play a placement match on April 28 against one of the four teams from Group B – Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic and Scotland.
