U-20 MNT Defender Nathan Sturgis Returns to L.A. Galaxy, Won't Travel to Argentina with U.S.

CHICAGO (April 18, 2006) – Defender Nathan Sturgis will no longer be traveling with the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team for their training camp from April 18-27 in Argentina.

Sturgis had been released by the L.A. Galaxy to participate in the team’s first foreign training camp of the year, but was recalled by his club when Tyrone Marshall suffered an injury during the Galaxy’s 2-1 victory over Chivas USA this past Saturday.

The U-20s leave Tuesday evening and it is unlikely a player will be added to the roster to replace Sturgis.

A member of the USA’s 20-player squad for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship last summer in Holland, Sturgis would have been the most veteran player on the roster.

The trip to Argentina is just the second camp for the U.S. Under-20s this year as they kicked off their two-year cycle towards the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 last month in Sunrise, Fla. Players eligible for the World Cup must be born after Jan. 1, 1987.

The U.S. will train for three days before facing Arsenal de Sarandi on Saturday, April 22, and River Plate on Monday, April 24. Two days later on April 26, the U-20s will play their first international match of the year against Argentina.
