U.S. U-18 MNT Draws, 1-1, Against Norway in Second Match of Lisbon Tournament

Altidore Scores Lone Goal for the U.S.
U.S. Faces Host Portugal on Sunday

LISBON, Portugal (June 9, 2006) – The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team tied Norway, 1-1, in their second game of the Lisbon International Tournament in Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday (June 9). The lone U.S. goal came courtesy of Josmer Altidore off a free kick in the eighth minute.

The U.S. U-18 Men now have two draws as they head into their final match of the tournament against host country Portugal on Sunday, June 11.

Altidore took his shot when a combination play by Daniel Kelly and Cameron Brown earned the free kick. Kelly passed the ball to Brown, who took a touch, turned and was tackled in the box. Altidore stepped up to slot the ball in the lower right corner.

But the U.S. was unable to hold off the Norwegian attack as they came back to tie in the 68th minute. A Norwegian shot was blocked by Cameron Lamming but rebounded to Ruban Jenssen, who took a shot from the penalty spot. The shot deflected off Lamming and into the goal.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the U.S. having their best chance to get ahead in the 75th minute off of a free kick. Johnathan Villanueva crossed in a ball that Kyle Davis was able to get a head on. The attempt was parried by the Norwegian ‘keeper before rebounding out. Greg Eckhardt was able to get a foot on it but mis-hit the ball in front of the goal.
