Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
2006 U.S. Open Cup Preview: Virginia Beach Mariners (USL 1) vs. Real Salt Lake (MLS)

Virginia Beach Mariners (USL 1) at Real Salt Lake (MLS)
Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, Utah
Tuesday, July 11, 7:00 p.m. MT

The MLS’ Real Salt Lake has had a short, one game, relationship with the U.S. Open Cup. Playing in their first ever Open Cup match in 2005, RSL traveled to Minnesota where they were outscored by the Thunder 6-4 and lost in overtime. Being awarded a home game in the 2006 Third Round allows RSL supporters to witness their team’s first ever home Open Cup game and possibly first ever Open Cup win. The Virginia Beach Mariners will try to spoil the home team’s party, much like they did against Arizona Sahuaros in the Second Round. Virginia Beach has been paired against an MLS opponent in the Open Cup Third Round before, traveling to Dallas in 2004 to face the Burn, losing 2-0. If there is one player who can get the job done for the Mariners, then it is experienced Jamaican forward Gregory Simmons. RSL surely does not lack speed and fire power on their attack either. Similar to Simmons, Jeff Cunningham has the ability to take opponents on with speed and put the ball in the net. With no lack of explosiveness on either side, this match is sure to provide the home crowd with enough entertainment for their first Open Cup game.
Note: This match is scheduled for Tuesday, a day before the other matches in this round.
