2006 U.S. Open Cup Preview: Des Moines Menace (PDL) at Kansas City Wizards (MLS)

Des Moines Menace (PDL) at Kansas City Wizards (MLS)
Blue Valley Athletic Complex, Overland Park, Kansas
Wednesday, July 12, 7:30 p.m. CT

The struggling Kansas City Wizards (6-9-2) look to get back on track with a strong start to their 2006 U.S. Open Cup campaign. Matched up against the red hot Des Moines Menace, the Wizards hope to end a five match winless streak and stop the Menace’s strong Open Cup run. With three wins so far in this year’s tournament, the Menace has won more Open Cup matches than any other team. Their most impressive win came at the hands of USL-1’s Minnesota Thunder. Down a man starting in the 19th minute, Des Moines’ Tomas Boltnar notched his tournament leading fourth goal that led the Menace to a 1-0 road victory. Certainly Des Moines has not seen an attack as powerful and experienced as that of Kansas City’s. The Wizards might have the most depth for the forward position in all of America. They are led by MNT member’s Josh Wolff and Eddie Johnson, along with rising young stars Scott Sealy and Ryan Pore. With the odds stacked against the Des Moines Menace, a flawless effort is needed for this PDL side to upset Kansas City on the road. The winner of this match is slated to travel to Chicago to face the Fire in the Fourth Round of the Open Cup at the new Toyota Park.
