Chicago to Host Fifth Match of Send-Off Series on Aug. 12

CHICAGO (April 19, 2007) – The U.S. Women’s National Team will face New Zealand at Soldier Field in Chicago at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the fifth game of the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup Send Off Series live on ESPN2.
The USA’s six-game Send-Off Series begins June 16 vs. China in Cleveland, and continues on June 23 vs. Brazil in East Rutherford, N.J. and July 14 vs. Norway in East Hartford, Conn. In addition to the New Zealand match, the U.S. will also face Japan on July 28 in San Jose, Calif. and Finland on Aug. 25 in Carson, Calif.

“U.S. Soccer has put together an excellent series of matches for us leading into the Women’s World Cup,” U.S. WNT head coach Greg Ryan said. “We’ll get to see some teams, including New Zealand, that will be in China in September, it will give the players a chance to play games at home after so many games abroad recently, and it will give fans across the United States the chance to see the team and cheer them on before we embark on the great challenge of trying to win the Women’s World Cup.”
Tickets starting at $18 go on sale beginning Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m. CT at ussoccer.com, at all Chicagoland Ticketmaster outlets (including Carson, Pirie Scott, Hot Tix, fye, and Ritmo Latino) and by phone at 312-559-1212. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets by calling U.S. Soccer at 312-528-1290 or obtaining a group order form at ussoccer.com.
Additionally, as a special benefit to VISA cardholders, a VISA-only pre-sale will be held between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. CT on Wednesday, April 25, at ussoccer.com. VISA, the preferred payment card of U.S. Soccer, is the only payment method accepted for this advance sale opportunity.
The last visit for the U.S. WNT to Chicagoland was on Aug. 27, 2006, a 4-1 victory against rival China at the brand new Toyota Park in Bridgeview. U.S. captain Kristine Lilly was one of many stars of the game, scoring a pair of highlight-reel strikes.
Soldier Field has been the site of five games for the U.S. WNT, most notably a 7-1 victory vs. Nigeria in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Most recently, the U.S. celebrated its 2004 Olympic gold medal in the recently remodeled lakeside venue with a 5-1 victory vs. Ireland in the Fan Celebration Tour.
New Zealand qualified for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup as the champion of the Oceania region, and is ranked 23rd in the most recent FIFA Women’s World Rankings. The U.S. has a 5-1-0 record vs. the Kiwis, with the lone defeat coming on Dec. 15, 1987, in Taipei City, Taiwan. Most recently, the U.S. topped New Zealand in a pair of Fan Celebration Tour matches on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10, 2004, in Portland and Cincinnati, respectively.
The 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final Draw is taking place on April 22 in Wuhan, China, at which time the USA will find out its first-round schedule and venues for the fifth FIFA Women’s World Cup. The U.S. is coming off a 5-0 victory vs. Mexico in the first domestic match of 2007 on April 14, and after the draw the team will return to Residency Training Camp in Carson, Calif., and play Canada on May 12 in Frisco, Texas (tickets), before kicking off the Send-Off Series one month later.
