ONE DAY UNTIL BRAZIL
The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team will face Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship tomorrow at Turku Stadium in Turku, Finland. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. local / 7 a.m. ET and will be televised same-day delay at 11 a.m. ET/PT. Fans can also follow the action live on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker, starting at 7 a.m. ET.

GOLDEN GOAL
Similar to all FIFA competitions, the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 World Championship will use the Golden Goal. If a match finishes as a draw after 90 minutes, extra time of two 15-minute periods will be played. If a team scores during extra time, that team wins the match and the game is over. Otherwise, if neither team scores, penalty kicks will determine the winner.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
Brazil qualified in an unfamiliar position this year in Bolivia at the South American U-17 Championships – second place. It was the first time in five years Brazil did not emerge victorious, as Argentina snatched the reins from their grasp. After the first group phase, the Brazilians looked unbeatable with four wins over Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador and Venezuela. In the second phase they were shocked by Colombia 1-0, which basically lost them the title. They were able to secure second place with another win over Uruguay and a 1-1 draw with Argentina, but their fifth straight top finish was unreachable. The Brazilians did have the best defensive record in the competition by letting in only four goals.

IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
With two wins and a tie, Brazil finished atop Group C with seven points. The Brazilians drew with Cameroon in its first game 1-1, but didn’t let in another goal, cruising against Portugal 5-0 and downing Brazil 3-0.

ABOUT TURKU STADIUM
The original Kupittaa stadium (also called Turku Stadium) in Turku dates back to 1950 and has been completely renovated in time for the FIFA U-17 World Championship Finland 2003. It now holds 7,000 fans and is located a little over a mile from the center of the city. Two teams share the stadium: FC Inter Turku and Turun PS. FC Inter Turku, founded in 1990, was first promoted to the Finnish first division in 1996. Turun PS is more commonly known as “TPS”. It is one of the oldest clubs in the country, having been founded in 1922, and one of the most prestigious too, with eight titles to its name - all won before 1975.

ONLY THREE REGIONS LEFT
As 8 teams moved on to the quarterfinals, only three confederations are still represented – CONCACAF, UEFA and COMNEBOL. Not only was it the first time for all three teams from CONCACAF to advance to the quarterfinals, it was the first time ever in the tournament’s history that all three representatives from both confederations on the American continent advanced to the second round. CONMEBOL have now had three quarter-finalists three times over – in 1995, 1999 and 2003.

PREVIOUS U-17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
The U.S. and Brazil have met twice before in the FIFA U-17 World Championship, each claiming a victory.  In 1989, the U.S. won 1-0, while Brazil was victorious 3-0 in 1997.

BRAZIL’S SCORING HOT STREAK
The Brazilians have scored at least once in their last seven matches in the U-17 finals. The last time they failed to score was against Australia in the 1999 final. Brazil has scored at least once in their last seven U17 finals matches. The last game that they played without scoring was the 1999 final against Australia, which they won in penalty kicks.

TWO OUT OF NINE
Brazil have participated in every FIFA U-17 World Championship except Japan 1993, and are one of three sides to win the trophy twice - with Nigeria and Ghana the others. The Brazilians won consecutive titles at Egypt 1997 and New Zealand 1999.
