U.S. U-16 GNT Defeats Brazil U-16 GNT, 4-1, in Teresopolis
TERESOPOLIS, Brazil (Dec. 15, 2007) - The U.S. Under-16 Girl’s national Team defeated the Brazilian U-16 Girl’s National Team by a 4-1 score on Dec. 15 in Teresopolis, Brazil, at the Brazilian National Team Training Center in the final match of the year for the U.S. girls before they head into 2008 with the goal of qualifying for next year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Brazil scored first in the match, getting a goal 19 minutes in, but the USA drew even three minutes before halftime on a goal from Vicki DiMartino. The Americans added three more goals in the second half, the first off an own goal, before Amber Brooks and Mary Wagner scored in the final 10 minutes. The USA out-shot Brazil, 23-7 for the match. In the other game on the tour against a Brazilian women’s club team, the USA cruised to a 6-1 win, getting two goals from Courtney Verloo, two from DiMartino and single scores from Samantha Mewis and Kealia Ohai. A site and dates for CONCACAF qualifying for the 2008 U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup have yet to be confirmed, but it should take place in the middle of 2008. The World Cup tournament is scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 16, 2008. The U.S. U-16s won all three of their international matches this year, also twice defeating a combined German team of U-16s and U-17s last March at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., winning by 3-0 and 1-0 scores.
