The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team fell 2-0 to CA Paranaense this afternoon in their opening match in the U-19 Super Group at the 25th Dallas Cup in Dallas, Texas. The Under-18s next match will be against Deportivo Saprissa, a club team from San Jose, Costa Rica. The first half of the match was fast-paced as both teams had chances on goal, but neither could find the back of the net. The U.S. had the best chance in the 20th minute when midfielder Danny Szetela ripped a 20-yard rocket that found the crossbar. The Brazilian club team also had a couple opportunities, but Stephen Sandbo was able to keep a 0-0 tie into halftime.
In the second half, Bob Jenkins’ squad should have put points on the scoreboard a couple of times, but in the end it was Paranaense that notched two goals. The first goal came in the 55th minute when Evandro Goebel played a nice give-and-go with a teammate at the top of the box, pushing him through on goal against Sandbo for an easy finish.
The second goal came with five minutes remaining, the Brazilian side doubled their lead when Anderson Aquino got behind the U.S. defense and raced onto a long ball from midfield. Sandbo came out to cut off his angle, but was Aquino was able to slip it by him, ending any chance the U.S. had of finding an equalizer. - U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team Match Report - Participants: U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team vs. CA Paranaense Location: Dallas, Texas Date: April 4, 2004 Weather: Warm, 70 degrees
