U.S. U-23 Women Down England, 1-0, on 90th Minute Goal

BURTON, England (March 12, 2008) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team avenged a 3-1 loss to the England U-23 WNT last February in Spain with a 1-0 win in Burton, England, northwest of Birmingham.

The University of Florida’s Ashlee Elliott scored in the 90th minute to give the USA a deserved victory in which they out-shot England, 19-4.

The goal originated at the feet of midfielder Yael Averbuch, who played a pass out to the right wing for Tina DiMartino, who in turn laid the ball off to Elliott at the top of the penalty box. The England ‘keeper came out to challenge, but Elliott took her chance first-time, chipping the ball into the net.

In the 69th minute, DiMartino slammed a shot off the right post at the upper corner. With six minutes left England had their best chance, but goalkeeper Kelsey Davis stoned with English attacker with a great one-on-one save.

The two teams will meet again on Friday, March 14, to finish the two-game series.
