U.S. Under-17 MNT Tops China to Take Seventh Place at Mondial Minimes Tournament  

MONTAIGU, France (March 24, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team '92s defeated China, 3-1, behind goals from Luis Gil, Rob Derschang and Carlos Martinez to take seventh place a the Mondial Minimes Tournament in France.

It took less than two minutes for the U.S., who scored six goals in four games, to find the back of the net. Derschang slotted a ball into the box for Gil, who's one time shot sailed into the upper corner of the net past Chinese goalkeeper Zhenqiang Zhang.

China finally broke through in the 52nd minute, as Kaimu Zheng headed home a Yi Guo free kick to even the score at a goal apiece.   

Derschang put the USA back on top in the 70th minute, running onto a long ball from defender Alex Shinsky and heading it past Zhang to give the Americans a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Four minutes later, Stefan Jerome set up Martinez, playing a through ball that Martinez ran onto before dribbling past a defender and taking a shot that made the final score 3-1. It was the third goal of the tournament for Martinez, who finished as a runner up for the top scoring honor.

England, who lost to the U.S., topped France in the championship game on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie.
