PORTLAND, Ore. (April 18, 2008) - The U.S. U-23 Women's National Team opened its week-long training camp in Portland, Ore., with a resounding 7-1 victory over the University of Portland on April 18 at Merlo Field in a match played in front of 3,500 fans. The U.S. training camp ends on April 24.

The USA was up 2-0 inside of just eight minutes as midfielder Yael Averbuch tallied in the 4th minute and forward Katie Larkin doubled the lead four minutes later. UP’s Jessica Tsao pulled a goal back in the 28th minute, but the U.S. U-23s then reeled off five consecutive scores in the next 34 minutes, one before halftime by forward Katie Schoepfer and then four in the first 17 minutes after the break.

Midfielders Kiki Bosio and Tina DiMartino tallied a minute apart, Bosio on a rebound and DiMartino on a breakaway, followed by a second goal off a 25-yard blast from Averbuch and finally a goal from Lorraine Quinn, who finished a rebound off her own shot. Quinn was a late call-up to the camp due to an injury to Portland’s Kendra Chandhoke, who ended up playing for UP in the match.

Five different players had assists for the USA including two from midfielder Brittany Klein. U.S. head coach Bill Irwin was coaching against his own team as he serves as Director of Soccer and head men’s coach at UP.

Despite giving up seven goals, Portland freshman goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung made some spectacular stops. She finished with 10 saves on the night, while the U23’s outshot UP 25-8. In the other net, former Pilot keeper Cori Alexander played the second half in between the pipes for the U23’s and finished with two saves, while Joanna Haig made one stop during the first 45 minutes.
